The French use the Euribor rates unlike the UK banks who follow the Libor rate, which currently is higher than the Euribor. On this premises when people look at the base rate, they often make the mistake of thinking banks buy and lend on the base rate, hence the difference between the mortgage rate when the base rate decreases.

There are many aspects to consider when arranging finance, one of the most important is to avoid taking out a mortgage with the same bank you intend to use for your personal banking needs for the following reasons -

  • They are normally very expensive
  • The bank will also sell you insurance policy's when there could be more suitable options on the market.
  • Once the bank has your mortgage and private banking you will limit your options should you choose to refinance in the future.
